New Kava Industry Standards Support Safer, Higher-Quality Products
Independent product testing, clearer quality frameworks, and growing transparency are strengthening the American kava marketplace.
As interest in kava continues to grow across the United States, the kava industry is taking meaningful steps toward stronger product testing, quality standards and consumer transparency.
In 2025, the Kava Coalition published the Harmonized Multinational Kava Standards, a framework intended to support quality assurance and compliance for kava. The organization also began publicly reporting results from independent testing of commercially available kava products.
Why does the kava industry need product standards?
The word "kava" can be used to describe products that differ significantly in quality, preparation and composition — from traditional medium-grind root to extracts, capsules, canned beverages, and combination products. Without clear standards, consumers may struggle to compare those products or determine whether they contain authentic kava material.
Industry testing can help evaluate kavalactone content, chemotype, microbial contamination, heavy metals, pesticide residues, mycotoxins, residual solvents, moisture levels, and product identity.

According to the organization, 73% of the tested products met its microbial safety action limits during the fourth-quarter survey, compared with 49% during the first-quarter survey — showing that routine market surveillance can identify weaknesses and track measurable improvement.
What improved kava testing means for consumers
A responsible kava company should be able to explain where its kava was grown, which parts of the plant were used, whether the product contains an extract, whether it was tested, which laboratory performed the testing, and whether other active botanicals are present.
